Men, on the other hand, were not as affected by wine consumption, especially those who consumed three or more glasses of wine a week (at least one glass of each type wine).
The study was presented today (March 18) at the American College of Cardiology's 73rd Annual Scientific Sessions in San Diego, Calif. Researchers analyzed data from more than 9,000 women aged 15 to 69 years who visited the Brigham and Women's Hospital emergency department between 2007 and 2011. Over the course of study period, 1483 male and 1421 female people died from suicide.
Men who drank more than twice the recommended amount of alcohol had a slightly reduced risk of dying by suicide, according to the study, led by researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard-affiliated Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital, and a hospital in the Netherlands. However, women who consumed more than three glasses of wine per week were more than twice as likely to die by suicide than were women who consumed no to two glasses of wine. "We found that there was a dose response for the risk of death by suicide with higher alcohol use," lead study author Dr. Jonathan M. Bachmair, of Brigham and Women's Hospital, said in a statement. "We think this is probably not because more men than women are actually drinking too much, but rather that the protective role of alcohol is different for men and women."
The study also showed that some individuals who binge-drink alcohol regularly have a lower risk of death by suicide compared to others who don't drink as much. "Our study suggests that certain individuals who engage in binge drinking may have a Priligy 90 Pills 20mg $139 - $1.54 Per pill lower suicide risk relative to those who don't binge drink, but that this protection is not seen in all individuals," Bachmair told Live Science in an email.
